Grimsbury Beavers Build Homes - 03-06-2010

Beavers from 1st Grimsbury Scout Group, based in East Close, Banbury have raised £1350 for Habitat for Humanity UKBeavers_build_homes.jpg

This is sufficient to fund the construction of an entire house for a 3rd world family in need of a decent place to live

Beaver Scouts [aged 6 to 8 years old] presented a giant cheque to Ian Walkden, National Director, for Habitat for Humanity UK at their Scout Hut in Banbury last Wednesday

Ian Walkden said that this money, in particular, would be heading to Haiti to support the reconstruction taking place after the earthquake.

Funds were raised through a very successful community coffee morning, organised and run by Beaver Scout Leaders, a Cub Scout 'Scrap Heap Challenge' - building shelters from cardboard boxes and recycling waste, and individual collection boxes taken home by Beavers, Cubs and Scouts.

Steve Coombs, Assistant Cub Scout Leader, went to Cambodia as a volunteer with Habitat for Humanity in February 2010.

During his stay he helped to build two homes in a week and handed them over to local families who were being re-located from squalid shacks on a Phnom Penh rubbish tip.

With the help of Habitat for Humanity staff in Banbury, Beavers, Cubs & Scouts learned about Cambodian children who live and work on this rubbish tip and their need for a decent place to live.  Supported by their adult leaders, the young people worked together to raise sufficient funds to construct a whole house.
