Kilimanjaro Challenge raises funds for Scouting..... - 07-03-2010

Kilimanjaro Charity ClimbWalking.jpg

In October of this year James and Katherine Adams are climbing Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania to raise funds for Age Concern Oxfordshire and South Chiltern Explorer Scouts.

James and Katherine have been involved in Scouting in South Chiltern since they first met 15 years ago at Castle Grove Venture Scout Unit. Prior to this James had also been a Cub and Scout at Stoke Row. They are still involved today with Katherine being the ADC for Beavers, whilst James is the DESC. They are also involved as TAs as well as being on the District’s Appointment Advisory Committee.

South Chiltern Explorer Scouts provides adventurous activities and personal development opportunities for young people aged 13½ to 18 in South Oxfordshire. We promote the physical, intellectual, social and spiritual well-being of the young people, helping them to achieve their full potential. The young people develop most when they are 'learning by doing,' when they are given responsibility, work in teams, take acceptable risks and think for themselves.

Katherine has been working for Age Concern Oxfordshire for 7 years at their Bluebells Day Centre in Henley-on-Thames. They cater for clients from all over South Oxfordshire who are suffering from Mental Health issues such as dementia, depression and anxiety. Not only does the Day Centre provide the clients with a stimulating programme of activities, it also allows the carers to have a much needed break. Katherine is also the co-ordinator for Age Concern Oxfordshire’s Flexible Care Service in the south of the County. This service provides one-to-one support for older people with mental health issues in their own homes.

Age Concern Oxfordshire is a local charity which promotes the well-being of older people throughout Oxfordshire, and helps them to make later life a fulfilling and enjoyable experience. They are dedicated to working with and for people aged 50 and over, to help them lead happy, active and as fulfilled lives as possible. They do this by; providing local services, support with legal and financial issues, and communicating older people’s needs to local and national agencies.

The money that they raise will go towards providing services for older people throughout Oxfordshire. It will also go towards providing new camping and expedition equipment for the Explorer Scouts to help them work towards and gain their Queen’s Scout Award, as well as their Duke of Edinburgh’s Awards.

Katherine and James are climbing the 5,895 metre high mountain with Action Challenge who specialise in organising adventurous challenges to raise funds for charity. To be able to take part in this challenge, and support their two chosen charities, they need to raise a minimum of £6,800 and are organising a wide variety of events over the coming months to achieve this. These include amongst others;

   A Black Tie Dinner Dance on Saturday 24th April at Badgemore Park Golf Club
  A Curry Evening on Saturday 22nd May at the Christ Church Centre, Henley-on-Thames
      An Auction of Promises on Friday 16 July at Shiplake Memorial Hall
