Too cold for Kangaroos! - 18-10-2009

It’s too cold for Kangeroosjoti2009v.jpg

Banbury Beavers, Cubs and Scouts gathered at their campsite in Horley, this weekend.  They took part in a Jamboree, a gathering of Scouts but with a difference, as the Scouts they met were from all over the world.

An annual event called “Jamboree on the Air/Jamboree on the Internet” ( JOTA/JOTI) happens over the third weekend in October .  This year over 60 scouts from the Banbury area used computers connected to the internet to talk to other Scouts from over 60 countries including countries as far away as Australia, Venezula and Tahiti. They also had the chance to speak to them using Radio.

joti2009iv.jpgAlex Lyczkowski, Cub Scout leader from 1st Grimsbury Scout Group, said “This is the first time we have tried this in Horley on such a big scale.  Those Scouts that came really enjoyed it and were amazed how easy it was to speak to other Scouts.  The whole idea of this event was to show Scouts that they were part of a worldwide organisation and they also got chance to learn how to use IT equipment for communication.

In one internet conversation a Beaver Scout, aged 6, asked a girl scout in Tazmania, Australia whether there were any Kangeroos nearby.  The girl answered “No it’s too cold for Kangeroos but you can see walabis when it gets dark.  In another conversation a Scout from Africa was disappointed to hear that there were no polar bears in Finland and did you know that Beavers in Barbados can start at the age of two !
