Mountaineering

  • Below are details of summer walking, winter walking, and climbing, and the permits required to lead these activities in Scouting.

Summer Walking

The summer walking permit syllabus is based on the Summer Mountain Leader (for Terrain 2) and the Hill and Moorland Leader (Terrain 1) qualifications.

The assessment checklist can be found here.

Assessments can be carried out (by arrangement) at the Winter Mountaineering Course held at Patterdale in February each year, or by contacting Dave Burton.

The following books are recommended:
Hillwalking by Steve Long
Mountaincraft and Leadership by Eric Langmuir (Forth Edition)

Winter Walking

For winter walking, the syllabus is based on the Winter Mountain Leader qualification.

The following book is recommended:
Winter Skills: Essential Walking and Climbing Techniques by Andy Cunningham and Allen Fyffe

Hill and Moorland Leader Course

We run training and assessment courses for the national Hill and Moorland Leader Award scheme which can provide National Governing Body qualifications and a sound basis for a Terrain 1 Scouting Hillwalking permit.

Climbing

The Scout climbing permit scheme is based on the Single Pitch Award syllabus, so the following book is recommended:
Rock Climbing Essentials by Libby Peter
